Brought to you by:
A porn star, a fashion designer and a tennis player walk into a bar. The bartender says, "So, you folks all want your own reality porn tv series?"
It's no joke (except for the part about the bar). The ever-expanding reality TV universe soon will include shows about a star tennis player (U.S. Open champ Andy Roddick), fledgling fashionistas (Project Runway) and aspiring adult-film thespians (Can You Be a Porn Star?). Well one thing for sure is you can try and get on Porn Stud Search - even I managed to make the cut on that one.
Former California gubernatorial candidate Mary Carey and Free Will Humping leading lady Tabitha Stevens will host the eight-episode, porn-star show, to debut on iN DEMAND and other pay-per-view outlets January 8. Industry legend Ginger Lynn will head a panel of distinguished judges who collectively have appeared in the likes of Whore of the Worlds and Thai Me Up.Billed as "the natural evolution" of the reality-TV boom, Can You Be a Porn Star? will track 28 women as they move, four at a time, into a Los Angeles home and endure a "gauntlet of interviews, photo shoots, challenges and surprises." Less this sound a bit too ABC Family Channel, the producers promise the show will be chockfull of "uninhibited nudity."
The winner will receive a one-year video contract, $100,000 and all the...Well, we really shouldn't get into that here.
In a statement Monday, producer Harry Feingold promised Can You Be a Porn Star? will be fun for the whole family--make that, the whole adult family. "We think [the show] will become an enjoyable, addictive series not just for men, but for wives and girlfriends who enjoy both reality TV and adult entertainment," Feingold said.
Cable's Bravo likely is hoping for the same devotion, if not quite from the same crowd, for its latest planned reality series.
As unveiled Tuesday, Project Runway, to debut in summer 2004, owes more than a passing titular resemblance to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's HBO series, Project Greenlight.
Like the Miramax-produced Greenlight, the Miramax-produced Runway will document the trauma and drama that occurs when amateurs are thrown shark-infested waters, in the latter show's case: The fashion industry.
While Greenlight's chosen ones get to muck up feature films, Runway's 10 thread mavens will vie for their own runway show at New York's fall fashion week. Catwalk expert Heidi Klum, whose managers are coproducing, will sit on the panel of judges.
Andy Roddick, meanwhile, will neither judge, nor host his new proposed reality show--he'll live for it.
Per the Associated Press, The Tour, which has yet to secure a network home, will follow Roddick's bouncing tennis ball as the 21-year-old, top-ranked ace travels the globe next May to September.
Roddick, set to host Saturday's Saturday Night Live, described himself as "totally amped." "I've given The Tour producers total access...except my bedroom--sorry, I have to draw the line somewhere," Roddick told the wire service.
Mandy Moore, Roddick's 19-year-old lady friend, should be pleased to hear the tennis pro's stance. Earlier, the popster/actress told the A.P. that she liked reality TV, as long as she got to watch it, and not star on it.
Said Moore: "My personal life is my personal life and it's behind close doors."
Of course, that sort of attitude won't get Moore her own series, much less ratings. Former pro football cheerleader Melana Scantlin opened up her love life to cameras, via NBC's Average Joe, and got rewarded Monday night. An estimated 11.1 million voyeurs caught the premiere, a solid performance opposite CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond and ABC's Monday Night Football.
